Neonatal Special and High Dependency Care

This module explores the specialist knowledge and clinical skills in neonatal nursing care required to deliver special and high dependency care to the neonate. The course will explore contemporary issues and development in neonatal nursing care to provide holistic and evidence-based practice in the neonatal setting. This course will provide the skills and knowledge to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate care of the sick neonate. The altered anatomy and physiology of the sick and/or preterm neonate will be explored, with reference to aspects of embryology. It is a requirement of the module that you are currently employed as a health care provider in the care of neonates. At the end of this module students will be invited to attend the Neonatal ITU module and complete their QiS (Qualified in Speciality) studies and go on to care for the most vulnerable neonates within the neonatal intensive care environment. We have a range of speakers that deliver on the module and I always encourage students to share experiences so we can evaluate the optimal care.

Entry Criteria

Effective registration with the NMC / HPC or other relevant professional body
Undertaken successful level 4/5 academic study
Currently be employed in practice and have the support of their manager in undertaking the module
