How training can help

You will know from your assessment that support is there for you. Software has been recommended to help you study and to achieve your full potential. Our training sessions are there to help you take full advantage of that potential. Here are a few of the skills we can help you develop:

  • Organisation and time management
  • Planning and writing essays
  • Independent skills
  • Spelling and proofreading
  • Note taking
  • Revision and exams
  • Short memory

What to expect during a training session

  • We will ask you a bit about your experience of using computer software packages. It’s useful for us to know how confident you are in using computers and new software.
  • It will also be good for us to know a bit about the course you are studying, any challenges you have encountered and study strategies you’ve found that work well for you.
  • We will do our best to accommodate any visual formatting preferences you have.
  • When you feel comfortable with everything, we will move on to delivering training, working at a pace that suits you.
  • There will be opportunity for you to ask questions or have something repeated as necessary. The important thing is that you feel confident using your software, that’s what our training sessions are all about. We will work flexibly to ensure a positive outcome for you.

We offer training on the following software:

What we need from you

As soon as you have your approval letter from your funding body you can get in touch to arrange your training.

Do you have your equipment and software?

You will need to have this in place prior to receiving training. If you’ve not already done this, your approval letter contains all the information you need to access your equipment and software.

Students who don’t have DSA funding can access training through .

How it works

We offer training sessions between 9am-5pm Monday to Thursday, 9am-4:30pm on Friday so you can book a session at a time to suit you. Sessions can be in person or remote, depending on your preference. We can also offer sessions with a male or female trainer.

Please note that Covid-19 restrictions mean we currently only offer remote training sessions via video call.

We offer training and DSA assessments all year round, not just during term time.

If you have any specific accessibility requirements please let us know before the session so we can do our best to make sure sessions are optimised to suit your needs.

How long does a training session last?

Sessions are usually one hour but this can depend on the complexity of the software.
